We tell you how below and provide some questions and answers that you may find useful. You can find out more information about SBLO In Central Bedfordshire here-

Q&As

Where are Bedfordshire activities advertised?

Phoenix Group activities are advertised on our website www.phoenixgroup.org.uk , on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/PhoenixDeafBeds and on the WhatsApp Group that we have created especially for Central Bedfordshire families. When you register your child at Phoenix, you will be asked if you would like to be added to this group.

What is the criteria for my child to attend activities?Your child must be hard of hearing or d/Deaf which has been confirmed by an Audiologist. If your child does not attend a school or specialist provision for d/Deaf Children, we will ask you to provide evidence of their deafness through a letter from your child’s Audiologist or teacher of the deaf (TOD).

How do I register my child with Phoenix?

You can register by clicking here.

This will take you to an online form to complete for the parent(s) and all children in the family between 11-17 years of age.

How do I book activities?

Once you have completed the registration form, you will receive an email with details about how to book onto activities.

Can I go along to activities with my child?

You are welcome to wait whilst your child participates in activities, however you would not be able to participate in activities yourself. At Phoenix activities, we encourage independence so we hope that over time, your child will be happy to stay with Phoenix staff and their peers independently.

Can my child’s friend or sibling attend with my child, they are not deaf?

Yes, we have limited spaces at activities but one sibling or friend (if of the age group specified) may accompany your child. Since siblings will be registered as part of your family you would book them on the same way as your d/Deaf child.  For a friend, you would book them on the activity in the same way, and there will be a link to a parental consent form that you would send to the friend’s parent to complete, in order for the friend to attend the activity.

How much do activities cost?

Please see advertisements, charges vary depending on how much the activity costs the charity to book. Phoenix receives some funding towards the activity costs and therefore every activity will be offered at a subsidised cost to you.

Will my children be safe at Phoenix activities?

All of the staff at Phoenix are experienced in working with children and young people, they have an enhanced DBS certificate and have undertaken training in safeguarding. You can find our safeguarding overview on our website under the Documents and Resources tab.

If you have any concerns about your child’s safety or they have additional needs which compromise their safety, please contact our Designated Safeguarding Officer by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.  to discuss further.

My Child has additional SEND, can they still attend?

The Phoenix Group have specific experience in working with d/Deaf and hard of hearing children and young people, we are not trained in working with other disabilities and are unable to provide 1-1 support or personal care. Therefore, to ensure the best experience for your child, please speak to your local authority with regards to meeting their level of need at your chosen SBLO activity.

Does my child need to bring anything to the activities?

Please see the information on the activities booking page with regards to what your child would need, how they should dress etc.
