This is a brand new and fun website for Deaf Children and Deaf Young People. The website is split into two different sections; one is for 8-12 years old and the other is for 13-18 years old. Both of the websites have their own news, events, games, get involved sections etc. There are also sections for parents and professionals. Young People can create their own avatar to use on the website! This is where they can make a cartoon version of themself and set up their own profile.

Go and check it out yourselves! Play about with it!

Emergency Service Text 999

If there is emergency people usually call 999 for help but Deaf people can’t do this. So they have set up national SMS text message to UK 999 services. The trial started on 14th September and if it is successful it will be launched in 2010. So if there is an emergency, Deaf people can text 999.

The website gives a full explanation in BSL and English. The first thing to do is to register your mobile before you can use the 999 service. After you have registered you can use 999. When texting using 999 you will need to put in WHICH service like police or ambulance, etc, then WHAT - to tell them what the problem is and finally WHERE - like house number or street or nearby landmarks, etc. It might be a good idea if you save a draft or template with WHICH, WHAT and WHERE text message to use so you don’t forget.

Important: Only use it for a real emergency like hearing people use 999 on their phone.
